xAI Is The AI Rival Google Fears, Not ChatGPT:

Share

When I built my first Large Language Model in 2019—three years before ChatGPT existed—I saw something most people missed: AI dominance isn’t about who launches first. It’s about who controls the data infrastructure competitors can’t replicate.

Everyone’s watching the OpenAI-Google battle. They’re missing the real threat.

A very interesting merger that will kill ChatGPT

SpaceX acquired xAI in a $1.25 trillion merger this month—the largest M&A deal in history.

Some analysts dismiss it as empire-building. Here are some dots I’m connecting.

Google’s Yahoo Moment

Apple just chose Google’s Gemini to power Siri in a $1 billion annual partnership. Looks like Google’s win, but…

In the late 90s, Yahoo didn’t just fail to compete with Google. They actively helped Google win by outsourcing search and featuring “Powered by Google” in their results.

Yahoo might have thought they were buying time. Instead, they trained their users to prefer their replacement.

I believe Google won’t have much choice but to outsource to X to keep up. X controls the vertical stack of space flight to launch data centers in space that Google needs but can’t build fast enough.

OpenAI is a competitor. xAI is potentially Google and ChatGPT’s Yahoo moment.

The Data Advantage I’m Not Seeing Being Discussed

xAI will control high value datasets OpenAI can’t access and Google can’t replicate:

Real-time human reasoning. X captures how people actually work through problems—raw debates showing entire decision-making processes. Google has search queries. Meta has social graphs. X combines both in real-time.

Tesla’s infrastructure. Battery technology powering data centers without grid dependence. Computer vision processing data through image encoding.

Autonomous driving datasets capturing real-world decision-making under uncertainty—training data for reasoning, not just pattern recognition.

Starlink’s global network. SpaceX asked the FCC to authorize 1 million satellites for orbital data centers. This provides metadata about global information flow at the ISP level—an infrastructure layer above where Google operates.

Space economics. SpaceX generated $15 billion revenue and $8 billion profit in 2025. They launch at cost. Google pays market rates.

Neuralink’s insights. If the above wasn’t enough, direct neural data showing how biological intelligence bridges pattern recognition with logical reasoning. Data that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
