What Google’s VP of Search Reveals About the Future of AI Visibility:
If you asked Liz Reid, VP of Search at Google, what they’re trying to achieve with AI search, she’d say this:
“get people to ask the questions they previously decided weren’t worth asking.”
Watch the full conversation here.

That’s the real ambition. Not the faster answers or the fewer clicks.
More curiosity, more questions, more engagement with Google as the place people turn when they want to understand something.
Everything else follows from that.
The trouble with keywords
For decades, search forced people to translate their real need into something a machine could process. Reid’s example cuts to it:
Prior to AI, someone would want “a restaurant for five people, one vegan, kids, not too pricey, near me” but instead they typed “restaurants in New York.”
They compressed their actual question because, as Reid puts it, “none of that information would be kind of spread throughout the web and so you wouldn’t feel confident you could just put in the question.”
The system wasn’t broken. But it was keyword-driven, with no way to account for a searcher’s context: income, lifestage, situation.
That was leaving an enormous amount of human intent on the table.
Did AI make questions worth asking more often?
Yes, and Reid is explicit about why. “People make a calculation when questions go through your mind of like, is it worth spending any time to figure out the answer to this question? And if the answer is no, then you just don’t ask the question.”
AI lowers that threshold. Questions that previously died unanswered because the effort didn’t feel worth it but now thanks to the technology, they get asked.
That’s not a marginal improvement. That’s an expansion of the entire question space.
What does that mean for AI search?
Google always had to contend with slop. Prior to AI, it was just slop, and now it’s AI slop. We’re living in an age where AI has simply accelerated the noise.
More articles and posts flooding social media thanks to AI’s content writing abilities. Your business needs to find ways to stand above the noise.
AI search platforms and Google will reward content that feeds user curiosity because users who get good answers come back more often, ask more questions, and ultimately generate more ad impressions.
Reid measures search quality by one thing above all: do people choose to come back?
Not just use search more within a session, but actively decide to open Google again.
Content that satisfies real, specific questions, and inspires the next one, is what earns that return.
That can only happen if AI (including Google) have the content to solve those contextual questions.
What does that mean for your business?
Businesses that want to be visible in AI search need to create that contextual content that helps AI inspire confidence in users i.e. content that encourages further searches rather than dead ends.
The businesses that become the answer are the ones that satisfy the fuller, more specific questions people are now willing to ask.
Ranking for a keyword is no longer the game.
The question is whether your brand, expertise, and content appear when AI synthesises an answer to the real question someone just felt confident enough to ask.
How does Artios help your business win?
Artios helps businesses fill that gap by data-mining the conversations your buyers are already having online.
That way we’re already creating the content your buyers will ask AI before they search.
The research draws on data sources that LLMs already trust, which means our content is already passing the fact-checking tests and making AI smarter.
AI then rewards the business by getting cited and becoming the answer.
